News » Farewell to Bev McCarthy

It is a sad day today as we say goodbye to Honorary Old Andrean, Colleague and good friend Bev McCarthy, who is leaving Grahamstown to start a new chapter as the Fundraising Co-ordinator at Grey High School in Port Elizabeth.

Bev’s career at College started 15 years ago, almost to the day. She had previously worked at the Rhodes Alumni Office for 7 years before being appointed on 1 June 2003 as the Jubilee 150 Foundation and Events Officer in the Andrean Development Office, which has since become the Foundation Office.

Bev played a critical role in the planning and hosting of the 150th anniversary celebrations, and over the years she has been pivotal in the overwhelming success of the Jubilee 150 fundraising campaign, the Prep 125th fundraising campaign and our more recent fundraising endeavours.

Bev has done it all in the world of alumni relations and donor stewardship, and she is a master in both the art and the science of fundraising.  She has written professional publications, secured sponsorship, become an expert in database manipulation and interrogation, confirmed pledges and promises to donate, submitted proposals for large grants and made countless cold calls to arrange appointments.

She has the uncanny knack of identifying opportunities and for making connections between people and places,  but she is best known for the wonderful relationships she has made and nurtured with so many people over the past 15 years.

Herewith, a few messages from OAs who have had the pleasure of working with Bev on certain projects:

Without Bev’s co-ordination, College would never have raised the largest amount of funding by any school in South Africa in 2005. Please wish Bev my very best wishes and sincere gratitude.

Bev, you were here from Day 1 before College had a Development Office, before the days when it was acceptable to even ask OAs and parents to make scholarship and capital expenditure gifts.  You were the foundation stone on which our unparalleled gift raising machine was built.  For that we will always be grateful and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for 15 years of selfless service.

Bev, I cannot believe that you are going away from College.  It seems like a big branch has been cut off the strong lovely tree that keeps College going. I just hope that College will hold first place in your heart forever! You will certainly always hold a very special place in the heart of College people to whom you have meant so much. Great happiness to you and all the family and lots of love always.

Bev, there is one thing you need to understand … it’s a fact of life that we all ‘Go Grey’ at some point in our lives.  Thanks so much for everything you have done for College and all the very best in your new ventures.

We know that Bev’s blood is a very dark blue – her loyalty to College is remarkable and College will always be in her heart.

Please join College in wishing Bev all the very best in this new chapter of her career.
